More of Gladding McBean

feats of clay or how I spent my afternoon with old people in an really hot building on a really hot day

In sacramento and spending time with my dad and mom. Wanted to get mom out of the house and do something normal so we went to Lincoln for the Annual Feats of Clay tour. In Lincoln, the Gladding McBean terra cotta factory has been producing most of the architectural terra cotta facades on buildings in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and points in between since 1875. Most of the buildings and the facades on them in downtown LA , that I have been obsessed with and photographed, were produced in Lincoln.

The tour was ok. Lots of old people, a group of annoying women in red hats and in touch with their inner diva that apparently couldn't shut up for the tour guide to explain what we were seeing.

Did I also mention that it was 100 degrees today and we were in a building that was actually firing items up in the kiln? Yeah it was hot

Not a lot of great shots, I had trouble with the light in the building.

Driving to Sacramento

drove up to Sacramento on Friday to spend sometime with my Pop and also to spend some time in the support center and out in the field in the Safeway kiosks. Part of what I enjoy on the drive up from LA is the chance to see vestiges of the old California on highway 99. Nice to see that not everything has been torn down for those awful big box shopping centers. I especially love Merced.

I didn't get a shot of the restaurant behind it but it looked like something straight out of the '30s. I think the sign must have been added in the '50s or '60s.
Sineloa enchiladas and their green chile ain't bad either

This is on the outskirts, looks like its been there since the '20. Next time I go through, I'll take some photos of the City Hall.

Downtown Miami

Downtown Miami is full of new developments, condos and construction. This is the side of a building that had me mesmerized by the shapes and colors

here's another shot of it

new york

In New York for a couple of days working with the Newark and Jet Blue partners. Stayed at the empire hotel. Got a great rate. Turns out to be a twenty something hangout on the bar. Never a good sign when you are checking in that the bouncer is carrying a limp passed out person to a waiting cab.
